Lower your risk of Type 2 Diabetes
Could you be at risk of Type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented, and finding out your risk is an important first step.
Public Health Wales and Diabetes UK Cymru are encouraging people across Wales to check their risk and take action early to protect their health.
Check your risk online
You can use the free Diabetes UK Know Your Risk tool to understand your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
The tool is designed for people who do not already have diabetes. It is not a diagnosis, but it can help you understand your risk and what to do next.
Check your Type 2 diabetes riskWhen to contact the surgery
Please use the online risk tool first if you are checking your risk of Type 2 diabetes.
You only need to contact your GP practice if the tool advises you to do so, or if you are worried about symptoms.
What can increase your risk?
Some people have a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Your risk can be affected by things such as age, weight, family history, ethnicity, waist measurement and activity levels.
The Know Your Risk tool will ask you a few simple questions to help estimate your risk.
How can I lower my risk?
Small changes can make a difference. These may include:
- moving more often
- eating a healthy, balanced diet
- losing weight if you are above a healthy weight
- getting support to make lifestyle changes
Public Health Wales has more information and support to help people lower their risk of Type 2 diabetes.
