What is AIS?

The Accessible Information Standard makes sure patients get information they can understand and any support they need to communicate.

Who it helps

AIS supports people who are:

  • Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Blind or partially sighted
  • Deafblind
  • Living with dementia or other communication needs
  • Using a different first language

What we will do

We follow five steps:

  • Ask if you have communication or information needs
  • Record your needs in your notes
  • Alert staff so your needs are clear
  • Share with other services (if needed and with consent)
  • Act to meet those needs

Formats and support

We can provide information in large print, Easy Read, Braille, email, or phone.
We can also arrange interpreters if required.
