It is important to identify yourself as an unpaid carer at your GP surgery and with local health professionals, so we can support you appropriately.

Who is an unpaid carer?

If you provide emotional, physical or practical support, whatever your age and whoever you look after, you could be an unpaid carer.

As an unpaid carer, you have a right to information, advice and assistance to help you in your caring role.

What support is available?

Support for unpaid carers across the region can include:

  • help to apply for a Carer’s Assessment
  • advice about Direct Payments and respite services, subject to assessment
  • short breaks from caring
  • access to grants
  • counselling and wellbeing services
  • activities and support groups in the community
  • welfare benefits advice
  • specialist support, including young carers, male carers, parent carers and carers of people living with dementia
